<image:title>blog content - Advancing Freedom Forward: Transforming Housing with Collaborative Solutions - Charlotte’s recent leap to No. 38 from No. 50 in the national ranking for upward mobility is more than just a number—it’s a beacon of hope.</image:title>
<image:caption>So what does this mean for our city? It suggests that children born in Charlotte today have a greater chance to rise out of poverty than in previous generations. But while this progress is heartening, we can’t forget that affordable housing is still a critical piece of the puzzle.</image:caption>

<image:title>blog content - Thank you, Pastor Marc</image:title>
<image:caption>Freedom Communities’ spiritual leader is moving on – but what a legacy he’s leaving Change is inevitable, and that’s both a blessing and a shame. We witness change for the better every day at Freedom Communities as we watch people transform their lives. Some changes we’re more reluctant to embrace. Rev. Marc Dickmann’s upcoming departure is one of those. While we celebrate his new role as pastor of a church in north Charlotte – which puts him closer to the aging parents and in-laws he’s helping care for – we’re hesitant to say goodbye. (In his typical fashion, Marc says of his and his wife, Amy’s caregiving roles, “That’s a responsibility we take on joyfully.”) He’s been our North star.</image:caption>

<image:title>blog content - It’s not just a steeple - It’s history. - According to the year posted on the cornerstone, 3501 Tuckaseegee Road in Enderly Park has been home to a church since at least 1955. Now home to Freedom Communities and all that goes on at the Tuck Opportunity Hub, there is still a church worshiping there on Sundays. Originally built as McQuay Presbyterian Church, the main building included the sanctuary along with a basement with bathrooms and classrooms for children.</image:title>

<image:title>blog content - For all the mothers out there, we see you - It’s 4:30 in the morning and the baby starts to cry again. I feel my heart beating faster in my chest wondering if she’ll stop. If she’ll wake up her sister. If my husband will take one for the team and rock her back to sleep. Or if it’s my turn. I’m tired. There have been more sleepless nights than I can count, and I’m hoping my coworkers and those I meet with throughout the day won’t question my intelligence or capability in light of my brain fog and memory loss. As my heart pounds, I wonder how much longer I can run on these fumes. I can't help but feel the shame wash over me as I acknowledge that my support system and privileges make my experience as a mother so much easier. My husband splits the care of our children and housework with me. We live in a pretty safe neighborhood, and our family, while 3-4 hours away, is happy to help when we need it. We both work and have cars to get us there. We’re also white.</image:title>

<image:title>What We Do - Meet the Freedom Corridor Collaborative</image:title>
<image:caption>In February 2020, Freedom Communities spearheaded the launch of the Freedom Corridor Collaborative where (prior to COVID-19) 70+ people representing neighborhood groups, as well as public, private, and faith-based organizations, came together to envision the change that’s possible through collaborative efforts. We established a steering committee and plan to host bi-monthly meetings. Through the collaborative we identify community assets and gaps, we attract public, private and philanthropic investments to fill those gaps and connect those who live, work and pray along the Freedom Drive Corridor.</image:caption>

<image:title>Danielle Young - Danielle Young Youth Development Coordinator</image:title>
<image:caption>Children are a vital part of our family-centered approach to community transformation. As our Youth Development Coordinator, Danny’s role is to support the work in one of our key focus areas: early education. In the neighborhoods surrounding the Freedom Drive corridor, only 1 in 5 children moves into 4th grade reading proficiently. To transform that statistic and put more children on a path to college and career readiness, Danny will work with the children of the moms involved in our Moms Moving Forward program, providing them with valuable educational support and resources. Danny has been part of the Charlotte community since 2003 and spent 16 years in early childhood education, working to close the educational gap while building strong relationships with families and caregivers. Her most recent position was with the YMCA of Greater Charlotte, where she worked as preschool coordinator. While in that role, she began contributing her time and efforts to Freedom Communities, helping the team run its remote learning site during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In that time, we saw children’s grades increase 45 percentage points — in part because of her commitment to looking beyond education and considering the whole child. That focus continues to define her work with us each and every day.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ashley Thompson - Ashley Thompson Housing & Facilities Manager</image:title>
<image:caption>Ashley’s entire career has been centered around the Freedom Drive Corridor. With over 28 years of finance and real estate experience, Ashley got her Real Estate Broker’s license in 2018 to pursue her passion of helping others become homeowners. For 19 years, Ashley found joy working for Carolinas Telco FCU off Freedom Drive through helping others build their credit and get their first credit card, first car, or even their first home. Her transition to real estate landed her with MECA Realty where she was Broker in Charge, managing over 400 properties and helping implement the current student housing program at UNC-C. Ashley became familiar with Freedom Communities when the company was hired to manage some of their properties. Ashley says her biggest accomplishment is her amazing daughter, Bella, who will be attending UNC-W to study nursing. When she is not at work, you can probably find her on a pool deck somewhere supporting her girl in her sport. With three rescues at home, the Cabarrus County Humane Society also holds a huge place in her heart.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Born in Georgia and raised in the mountains of Colorado, Quinlan’s journey has taken her through Washington, DC; New Orleans; Edinburgh, Scotland; and Chicago. However, she’s called Charlotte home for the past 25 years—the longest she’s ever lived in one place. Now, she brings both a breadth of experience and a deep commitment to this community to her role as Manager of Strategic Partnerships and Engagements at Freedom Communities, where she fosters collaborations that genuinely transform lives. Before pivoting to the nonprofit sector, Quinlan’s career wove through writing children’s books, planning large national conventions, and most recently serving as a pastor overseeing discipleship at a multi-site church. In each role and location, her purpose remained the same: helping people discover God at work in the story of the world and inviting them to join in that good work.</image:caption>
